Mission Statement
To offer rural farmers services, outreach and R & D opportunities in:
  • Sustainable banana productivity
• Business and product process development
• Product quality assurance & safety
• Process / product technology transfer & commercialization
Main Objective
To kick – start a pilot industry in banana value addition through a state-of-the-art industrial platform that leverages University academic research and technical leadership in realising optimum benefits for primary stakeholders while assuring product market strength and maximum consumer satisfaction.
Specific Objectives
  1. Establishment of benchmarks;
  2. Capacity building for rural farmers in new production technologies and agronomic practices;
  3. Ascertaining sustainable processing of quality market – driven matooke products;
  4. Linking rural farmers / seed entrepreneurs to favourable micro-financing mechanism;
  5. Establishing reliable supply chain models linking farmers / seed entrepreneurs to profitable market outlets;
  6. Assessing project impact on environmental sustainability, overall economic wealth, food and nutrition security at macroeconomic level;
  7. Transformation of Bushenyi TBI into a banana Industrial Research and Development Centre (BIRDC);
  8. Promoting entrepreneurship in the private sector and training at public institutions through establishment of an ITP.
Outputs
• A state-of–the-art rural–based banana processing industry at Bushenyi and Sanga based on the TBI/ ITP framework;
• Banana Industrial Research and Development Centre (BIRDC);
• A range of banana – based products on the market.
• Capacity build for market competitive banana production & value addition at all levels.
